Cocktail dresses may look adorable on the rack or in the window of a Melrose boutique, but trying them on is a bit of a joke - everything winds up being unbelievably short on me. Perhaps that's why I like Anthropologie so much; dresses there almost always come to right above my knees, which is perfect for me. I've learned that stores like Bebe or Guess are pretty much never going to work - I prefer NOT to show my butt when I bend over, thanks. While we're at it, let me mention that it's also sometimes hard to find something that isn't too low cut. I'm busty, and there's a time and a place for cleavage, but it's definitely not ALL the time.

So enter Shabby Apple, a site I learned about through the Anthro blogs. Their dresses are all modest - no exposed shoulders, no cleavage, no high hemlines. Yet somehow, they are all fashion-forward and flattering; no frumpy baggy styles!

I won a contest through Shabby Apple a while ago and got some awesome artwork out of it in exchange for a pie recipe, but I still haven't gotten around to ordering a dress from them. Their new Academia collection has me swooning:

I looove those sleeves!! This one is my favorite, and the model is wearing amazing tights - she's styled SO well with a chunky necklace and marigold heels. Unfortunately, I can't find the tights on the Shabby Apple site. These are kinda similar (over at ModCloth).

That color is pretty amazing, and the cut is really classic. And how gorgeous is this model and her amazing hair??

This one is from the Sidesaddle collection... I love, love, love the Tiffany blue and brown combo, and the color blocking here is super flattering.

Since I haven't tried on any Shabby Apple dresses, I can't really vouch for their quality, but I've read lots of positive things about them. For now, I'll keep lusting after them, and maybe one day I'll pull the trigger and buy one! Follow Shabby Apple's blog for interesting insights and fun contests.

NOM NOM!

My parents have always been into Skinny Cow products, but I was never a huge fan of their ice cream sandwiches. However, when I saw that they had come out with a new line of candy, I decided to give it a try; I'm always looking for low-cal treats. I'm a HUGE sweets person, and I absolutely love dessert, so instead of denying myself, I try to find less "naughty" versions of things that I love. I'm a fan of the Jello chocolate mousse cups that weigh in at like, 60 calories each.

Anyway, I picked up a box of Heavenly Crisps the other day and found them quite good, particularly for only 110 calories. The milk chocolate is smooth, and the filling is sweet but not cloyingly so. They satisfied my sweet tooth, and I'm going to try the peanut butter variety soon.

But a few weeks ago, our supermarket got in Dreamy Clusters in both milk and dark chocolate. They're caramel clusters with crispy rice, coated in chocolate. They're packed in little bags, each of which contains about 5-6 candies, for 120 calories.

You guys, these things are amazing. They're chewy but not take-out-your-molars chewy, and the chocolate tastes rich and decadent. There's no hint of the chalky flavors you sometimes get with low-cal chocolate. Again, one package was enough to satisfying my cravings for chocolate. If I tried these alongside full-fat chocolates, I don't think I'd be able to tell the difference. And bonus, they have fiber!

These things get a 9 out of 10 on the Awesome Meter. Good stuff - thanks, Skinny Cow!

You can find 'em at most grocery and drug stores. Target and Wal-Mart also carry them.

Oh, and I just found a coupon for Buy One, Get One Free - click here!

Rent the Runway Review

A few weekends ago, I gave Rent the Runway a shot (disclosure: that's my reference link if you wanna sign up), and I thought I’d review it here in case anyone was interested in using the service. I rented two dresses: the first, a navy blue Zac Posen, was $50, with an additional $5 insurance fee. I then rented a second style, a black, shimmery Milly frock, for a discounted price of $25 (plus the fee). I signed up for two sizes in each dress – your back-up size is free. For what it’s worth, the company will give you back your money if your dresses do not fit – but if you order two styles, they BOTH have to fit poorly, and you must contact RtR and return the dress(es) within 24 hours of receiving them.

<a href="http://www.renttherunway.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/product_teaser/product_images/dress_milly_such_a_doll.jpg" rel="nofollow" style="text-decoration: underline;
The dresses came on Thursday, just as planned. They were delivered via UPS in a large box that contained all 4 dresses, each individually hung and packed in plastic, a wardrobe bag emblazoned with “Rent the Runway,” a fit kit, and some sample packets of hair products. The fit kit was a bit disappointing; it contained one Biore make-up removing towelette and a small package of Hollywood Tape, a double sided tape cut into small strips. You get to keep the wardrobe bag. I used the towelette, and it really did remove all of my fancy shmancy wedding makeup, but it felt more like a sample than a bonus.

I excitedly tried on the dresses but quickly found some flaws. One of the styles still had fashion tape inside from the last renter; it was likely dry cleaned with the tape still on, so it was really clinging to the fabric, as though it was baked on. I couldn’t get it off. Later, my husband noticed some white marks on the back of one of the other dresses. I emailed Rent the Runway to let them know; in all honesty, I just wanted to make sure I wouldn’t be charged for the damage.

Amy, one of their specialists, emailed me back and told me she would credit my account for the styles that were damaged. She was genuinely apologetic and asked if I was able to wear any of the dresses; I replied that I managed to make one of the other sizes work. I also received a coupon code for 10% off my next rental.

I ended up wearing my first choice dress, the Zac Posen, in a back-up size, and I felt quite pretty and glamorous at the wedding I attended. The dress was nicely fitted, and the fabric was thick and expensive-looking, although my husband commented that it felt a bit like a wetsuit. I didn’t need the fashion tape. My second choice dress was cute, too, but even when I sized up, it was a bit short for my tastes. Then again, I’m 5’8”!

I’m pleased that I sized up for my back-up size. Both dresses fit a bit small in my regular size, even though I have purchased Milly dresses in my regular size before, and they fit fine, if a little large. I think one should keep in mind that these dresses have been worn/dry cleaned before, probably numerous times, which might affect their fit.

<img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fmQnS2kLxpg/ToEGeq-glwI/AAAAAAAAAGg/yMYu7bHkqV8/s400/P1011247.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5656809730956367618" style="cursor: pointer; They did refund me, but only for one of the dresses. Granted, it was the pricier dress, and they included the insurance fee. Great concept, great customer service, and excellent selection, but their quality control needs some work.

Contest at Effortless Anthropologie!

I will be back shortly with a full review of Rent the Runway - but I just wanted to let everyone know about 2 contests running over at one of my favorite blogs, Effortless Anthropologie. If you haven't heard of it, you can rent designer dresses for a fraction of the price for 4-8 days. This makes it fantastic for trying out luxe dresses you couldn't otherwise afford or getting just the right gown (the kind you wouldn't wear more than once) for an affair. If this goes well, I may use it for a black tie wedding. I can also see this service being awesome for prom.

If you sign up for their emails or "like" them on Facebook, you'll often get coupon codes. I was able to snag a $15 off code for my order!

So here's the deal - rent one dress, get two sizes (your regular size and a back-up size), and rent a second dress for $25. Each dress style incurs a $5 insurance fee, though, which is kind of a bummer because it isn't included in the price. There's also a fairly hefty shipping fee, although orders over $125 ship free. You can also rent accessories! On the day of the return, just drop the dresses in a pre-paid envelope and pop 'em in a mailbox. My rentals are due back on Sunday, but according to their (extremely nice and helpful) customer service, I can just put the dresses in a mailbox, even though there's no mail pick-up on Sundays.

I rented two cocktail dresses for the wedding. My only issue is, now I have to pack all the accessories I might use for either dress - oh, and I'm packing one of my own dresses as a "just in case" back-up. I think that no matter what, I'm going to need two sets of pumps - black and nude. I'm also bringing some simple, thick gold bangles. I love 'em - they dress up any outfit, go with everything, and are super versatile. I wish I had more stud earrings; I don't have much in the way of gold. Both of these dresses require overstated necklaces, in my opinion, but to me, that means toning down the rest of the accessories.

Oh, and I scored a beaded foldover clutch from Banana Republic in a neutral, beige color that will go with either dress - from $100 down to $23. Woo!

Here are the two dresses with possible accessories. We might need to check luggage for this vacay!

Rent-a-Dress by JanAlyssa featuring engraved bracelets

Steve Madden leather pumps
110 CAD - I've been mired in a sea of work, even after I quit my day job (YAY) to be a full-time writer. Things are still so awesome in the world, though, that I thought I'd better start updating The Awesome Meter. Who knows how many awesome things I've missed out on blogging in the past few months??

As I was getting ready to work out this morning, I noticed how many soaps I have. I am a pretty loyal gal, but I like to flit around between different face washes so I have a bit of a choice. For reference, I have sensitive skin - I had some issues in my teenage years, but mercifully, my breakouts cleared up during college. I still get the occasional blemish, and I tend to get a lot of redness/dryness in my cheeks. Here's what's in my rotation right now:

Cetaphil

I've been using this gentle stuff since high school. It cleanses nicely, has a very, very light fragrance, and is generally good for days when my skin feels extra-sensitive. This is my "base" product; I'll always come back to it. It may not be glamorous - even the name sounds medicinal - but it works nicely and consistently.

AM Rating (scale of 1-10): 7

Aveeno Skin Brightening Daily Scrub

I generally like to use this stuff in to shower, or on days when I'm feeling particularly oily. It's a great scrub that isn't too rough; the exfoliating microbeads are smooth, so you don't feel like you're exfoliating with sand paper, and the creamy base is moisturizing.

AM Rating: 7

Suki Exfoliate Foaming Cleanser

This was a Birchbox find. I love anything citrus scented, and this sugary scrub smells like a freshly squeezed lemon. It's a bit rougher than the Aveeno scrub, so I use it less frequently, but when you add water, it develops into a really nice foam. It's all natural and actually even tastes good, like sugared lemons, so you can use it to (gently) exfoliate your lips without worrying about a bitter, soapy taste.

AM Rating: 8

Dr. Bronner 18 in 1 Pure Castile Soap - Peppermint

This is my dad's favorite stuff, so we always had a big bottle of it at home. He also likes the lavender. The deal is, Dr. Bronner was a little nutty, and the labels on this soap reflect that - each label is crammed full of ways to use the soap as well as Dr. Bronner's insights on life, love, cleanliness, and religion. It's all very interesting to read. There are tons of ways to use the soap, although, as the label says, the key is to dilute it. I use it as a face and body wash - the peppermint variety leaves a great, fresh, tingly sensation. I particularly like using it on mornings when I have to wake up extra early to work out, as it really wakes me up and refreshes me. However, it's a bit drying, so I wouldn't use it as an everyday wash. They say you can use it to do everything from clean your floors to wash off your fruit, though I haven't tried that! A bottle lasts a VERY long time, and it also comes in bar form.

AM Rating: 6

Philosophy Purity Made Simple

This is another recent find from Birchbox. I've wanted to try Philosophy for ages but never got around to it. This stuff leaves your face feeling fresh and moisturized; it's extremely gentle, smells nice, and removes make-up, too. I'm a new fan!

AM Rating: 8

What's your go-to facial cleanser? There are so many great ideas out there!

I came across the site Rent The Runway the other day. At first, I was skeptical - why pay $200 to rent something when I could buy something cute for that amount of money and own it forever? But then I thought about it a little... sometimes, we have events that we need a specific sort of dress for, and we probably won't wear it again. Not only that, but if an event is truly black tie, it's sometimes difficult to find an appropriate dress for less than $200.

Now I'm thinking that I'd like to try the website. It seems like a pretty good deal - you choose the dress you want, and they ship it to you for your event. You get a second size for free, and if you want a back up dress (in case you don't like the way the first one looks on you), you can get it (and a second size in it) for $25. You stick it in the mail the day after your event. No worries about dry cleaning. My friends are having a black tie wedding at a fancy hotel in October, and I'm thinking I might give Rent the Runway a try! I'd love to have a fancy designer dress, even if only for a night. If you sign up for their emails, they send you some pretty nice coupons, too. Here are two looks I'm considering:

Look #1 by JanAlyssa featuring silver jewelry

I love that one-shoulder dress! You can also rent accessories through Rent the Runway, but I am such a jewelry hoarder that I probably have everything I need.

Look #2 by JanAlyssa featuring silk handbags

I love the red shoes here, and the dress is elegant and classy - simple with a slight twist.

So, what do you think? Have you ever used Rent the Runway? Would you consider it?

While we're talking Internet phenomena, has anyone tried Birchbox? They send you a box of deluxe samples for $10 a month. I'm curious enough to try it for March - I can't get enough of that kind of thing.

Grey Boots and Other Lovely Things

So I've been on the hunt for flat grey leather boots for MONTHS now. It seems that boot season is over, but I have another pair of AG Stevies in my closet in black, just waiting for me to wear 'em. I don't want to wear black jeans with brown boots, and my black boots are scuffed and ready to be retired. Now the question is: buy a more expensive boot that lasts longer, or buy a cheaper boot and swap it out when trends change?

Unfortunately, it was almost impossible for me to find something I liked, even something pricey! My absolute favorite is the Frye Paige boot:

Um. Gorgeous. I love the color, the build, the leather, everything. But $350 is a lot for a pair of boots, even one I've been lusting after for months. I just don't know if I can justify that.

The other day, as I was listlessly going from store to store looking for a boot that met my requirements (flat, smooth leather, dark grey, not too cowboy-ish, not above the knee, well made), I found this boot at Nine West.

So it fit every requirement, except that it's suede instead of smooth leather. BUT, they were on sale, and then 50% off sale price, which made them $34.99. For that price, I could compromise. The nice associate at Nine West ordered them for me online because my size was unavailable at the store... I'm still waiting for them to come. Maybe my search is over!

Grey boots, you are awesome. You are neutral and go with everything! So why did it take so long for me to find a simple pair??

I promised other lovely things, too, soooo....
Respect The Shoes is a really awesome fashion blog I just started reading. They are having a fantastic giveaway - a gorgeous necklace from Etsy (Etsy is AMAZING), and a gift card, to boot! Yep, I said "to boot." I brought it full circle. So head over there and enter by clicking here!

Jeans, Jeans, they're good for your heart....

Please excuse the childish subject of this particular post. Did you excuse it? Did you giggle a little? Good! Onward and upward, then...

So let's talk jeans. Jeans are, in a word, awesome. I mean, they go with everything, they're soft, comfortable, fashionable, come in tons of colors - what's not to like? I have a pretty big collection of jeans - everything from really old Gap jeans to some brand new designer ones I scored on clearance a while ago but haven't had the chance to wear yet.

Gap is a go-to place for jeans - I'm particularly fond of their curvy fit. My jeans pet peeve is the gap you get between the waistband and your back - which causes gapping and possible butt crackage. Nobody likes butt crackage, even if they say they do. Jeans that stretch and create that gap lead to me pulling all of my shirts down and wearing lots of tunics. Anyway, I don't have this issue with Gap curvy fit jeans, which seem to have a higher rise in the back. I will say that I don't really get Gap sizing in denim - I can usually go down 2-3 sizes in their jeans. Great for my self esteem, but it seems a bit unrealistic, no?

I'm a big fan of places like Nordstrom Rack or outlet stores for jean shopping, too - as long as you're cool with hunting through racks and racks of jeans and trying on a lot of pairs! It's also worth it to try on a few pairs in the same size, even if they are the same make and cut - jeans can vary quite a bit from one pair to the next! I was able to score a pair of 7 for all Mankind jeans from a Sak's outlet for a steal. I find that they fit a bit large and stretch out too much for my liking, but they're very comfortable.

Lately, though, my absolute FAVORITE jeans are made by AG. I was at Anthropologie, looking for a pair of jeans to try on with some tops, and I fell absolutely in love with the Stevie fit. They are a splurge for sure at full price - but I've worn mine constantly for the past few months. They are soft, comfortable, and perfect for curvy girls - they stretch but manage to hold their shape. The Stevie is a straight leg cut and fairly close fitting, but not as tight as a jegging. It's ideal for wearing with boots, but you can definitely rock a flat or heel with it, too. I have become obsessed, and ended up scoring another pair, in a soft grey, off of eBay. We also hit up the AG outlet in Palm Springs, where I got a pair of the Premiere Fit in a very dark wash. Premieres fit similar to Stevies, but are a bit longer with a slightly higher rise and less stretch. I'd definitely recommend trying on AG Jeans - I find them very flattering, versatile, and comfortable. In my opinion, they run about a size small. I'd try to get 'em from an AG outlet (50-75% off!) or stalk them on Anthopologie until they go on sale.

What brand are your favorite pair of jeans? Which cuts do you prefer?

Coupons!! Groupons!! Awesome!

The other day, I got an urgent email from my husband:
"Super good Groupon. I would buy you one, but it's one per person."

He provided a now-defunct link, so here's a new one for you guys:

http://www.groupon.com/los-angeles/

If you've never used Groupon before, it's a great service. Basically, there's a new coupon every day, usually for a service (like a massage or paintball), a restaurant, or an item (like cupcakes!). A certain number of people need to purchase the coupon before it goes into effect. If not enough people buy the coupon, it is void, and you are not charged. Each coupon works differently, but most are something like, "$30 for $65 worth of food at X Restaurant," or similar. You pay $30 and get a gift certificate. It's popular with locally owned businesses, as it really drums up new traffic to stores and eateries. We have tried lots of great new restaurants, mostly ones we never would have tried otherwise, thanks to Groupon. I was even able to score majorly discounted blow outs at DryBar and treat myself, my mom, and my mother in law to an afternoon of pampering and scalp massages. Side note: DryBar is WAY awesome.

Anyway, today's Groupon is $25 for $50 worth of merchandise at Nordstrom's Rack. It's okay if you don't live in LA; the coupons are good at ANY Nordstrom's Rack location. They expire December 31st, though, so buy 'em and use 'em quick. My husband and I stopped in yesterday - he bought some new Converse shoes, and I picked up a greyish lilac wool coat, a cute cloche hat, and a set of Stila eyeshadows and lipglosses (great gifts!). A new coat means I can probably do away with the black and white Express coat from 5 years ago... a coat that my husband derisively claims has "glitter" in it. It's not glitter, it's shimmery thread! Regardless, it's seen better days, so I'm happy to replace it - for a total steal!!

Coat: Originally $148, now $59.97

Cloche: Originally $32, now $15.97

Eye Shadow Palette: $9.97

Lip Gloss collection: Originally $20, now $7.97

Ended up spending an extra $50, but I got some great deals!

Go get your Groupon - now through Wednesday!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://awesomemeter.blogspot.com/2010/11/coupons-groupons-awesome.html' title='Coupons!! You win. When you slash your prices in half for sales, I just cannot control myself. Suddenly, at 50% less, tops I'd never looked at before become vibrant and gorgeous - I must have them! Oh, and who do you think you're fooling with the $150 minimum for free shipping? It's just a clever way to get me to spend more money! I thought I could cheat the system by purchasing items I wasn't sure about so I could hit the $150, then return whatever I didn't like, but I always end up liking your clothes. Oh, and now I feel like I'm getting a great deal when I find sale items I want at the store, because I don't have to pay shipping... and that's really all the justification I need.

You win, Anthropologie. You are awesome.

My favorite thing about Anthro is how well all of the clothing fits. Not everything, of course, but a lot of their items just sit on my frame really well. I also love how most of the skirts and dresses are long enough that I don't have to worry about bending over. I'm 5'8", and trying on dresses or skirts at, say, Bebe has become a total joke.

Okay, so here's what I scored recently:

First, I have been wanting a leather jacket really badly. A cute, fitted leather jacket would be perfect for those not-so-chilly Los Angeles nights. I love the color and styling of this jacket. It went on sale but sold out, but I grabbed it on a popback in a size large. Unfortunately, this was just much too large on me to be cute. The sleeves were bizarrely baggy. I'm so sad that I'll have to return it - for $130, this was a good deal!

Okay, I will admit, I bought this Geometer Tunic because it was $20. I mean, come on, can you pass that up? It's by We Love Vera, and I really do like the colors. Kind of looks like stained glass. However, it's really generously cut and blousey - so blousey that it was ultimately pretty unflattering on. Tying the sash tightly improves things, but I suppose I should have sized down to a 6. Regardless, I'm not a huge fan of the asymmetrical hem in real life.

Oh Kirklees sweatercoat, I have wanted you for so long! I nabbed this online to, cough, make my minimum... and because I'm sort of in love with it. My husband really dislikes the pattern, but you know what, sometimes you have just gotta get something if YOU love it! It was $80, still not a steal, but it was going fast and too cute to pass up. I wore it yesterday with my AG Stevies, boots, and a brown tee underneath, and I had two people tell me they liked it within 15 minutes - the friend I was meeting for dinner, and the waitress! It is the perfect weight for fall, too. I took a medium in the coat.

The Boucle de Souffle jacket is another one I've been lusting over. I am dying to pair it with the Maryam tank, but I can't bring myself to pay $58 for a tank top. I told myself that if I couldn't find this in my size at the local store, I would not buy it online, because then I'd have to pay shipping. But, lo and behold, there was a jacket in my size waiting for me when I went shopping! I took my regular size 8 in this jacket. It's wool, but the sleeves are cropped, so it's not the warmest thing in the world, but it's totally cute for fall. The nipped-in waist is super flattering.

So what about you? I'm hoping this will all pull together when I try it on!!

Wedding Take 2 by JanAlyssa featuring steve madden shoes

Or... should I wear this?

Feeling pretty darn sniffly today - I've been feeling off since Saturday night. At least the sore throat is gone - now I just sort of feel congested, tired, and, well, lousy. Hasn't stopped me from going to work (and getting some writing done), but it has stopped me from going to my beloved boot camp. I haven't been since last Friday! I attend a really nice outdoor boot camp - it takes place in a lovely park near the Grove. I love being able to be outside and get some really serious exercise. It always motivates me because I've paid for a chunk of lessons (though they're affordable) and because I like working out (and trying to keep up with) other people. I've met some really cool people through boot camp. The instructor is sweet, and there's no yelling or pressure - just positive feedback and encouragement. I don't think I could take the kind of boot camp where someone is screaming at you the whole time. It just seems like a miserable experience! At this boot camp, you keep up with your classmates, but you can also stop if you need to or go your own pace. It's definitely a hard core workout, and I'm proud of my self every time I finish it. Anyway, I highly recommend Morning Crunch Boot Camp - I give it a coveted 10 on the Awesome Meter. I was able to get in great shape for my wedding, and I've continued to go ever since! The workout varies every day, so it's never boring, and you're always working different muscles. Class meets 2-3 times a day, and you can go to any time slot, which makes it very easy to work into your schedule! It's so satisfying to come home totally invigorated.

The one downside? The workout is outside. Normally, it's great to work out in the park. It's a refreshing change from the gym. However, for the past week, the weather here in LA has been nuts. One day it's 110 degrees, the next, it's cold and rainy. I went all last week, even braving the mega-hot temperatures. Hardly anyone else showed up to work out that day, and they were definitely the smart ones! I felt a little delirious when I got home. Anyway, it's cold and wet today, and since I have the sniffles, I skipped class. I feel a bit guilty, but I'm excited to rest up and get back to it on Friday - it's supposed to be a nice day!

Anyway, I'm still looking forward to my friend's wedding in Boston. I saw this Leifsdottir dress (Summer Twilight) online and fell for it completely, even though I've never tried it on. I caved and bought it online in a size larger than I usually wear, figuring it's always easier to take something in than to let it out; my true size was sold out. We'll see how it works! I was thinking of wearing it to the wedding instead of my other outfit set, but I'm wondering if it's too...well... summery! This is, after all, an October wedding. I made an outfit set to determine how to style it, which includes tights and close-toed shoes in an attempt to cold weather-ify the flowery dress. I like the ruffled cardi with it, but it's gauzy. What do you think? Is this too summery for a fall wedding? Should I go with my initial instinct and wear the Primula dress? In other weird news, my husband doesn't care for the dress because he says it looks like Ed Hardy. Seriously??? Could this delicate silk flowered frock be any further from Ed Hardy-esque?

A note about the earrings here: they're from Silver Lining Decor on Etsy. I love them - they are so delicate and pretty, and they go with everything! I could go on forever about all the great finds I've bought from Etsy. My wedding was particularly Etsy-fied, as I finally had an excuse to buy all the beautiful things I'd always coveted!

Summer Twilight by JanAlyssa featuring dogeared jewelry

A tale of two necklaces

Don't you love it when you come across an item that you'd given up on... and it's on SALE??

I adore chunky statement jewelry. In fact, I just generally love accessories! There's no better way to dress an outfit up or down or make an otherwise bland ensemble pop. I have one amazing necklace from Madewell. It's chunky antiqued gold chain with hundreds of faceted crystals strung along one side (the second necklace pictured). Wearing it instantly lends a glamorous look to any outfit. It was expensive, and I debated the purchase a long time before buying it. I ended up wearing it to my rehearsal dinner before my wedding. I think it was an excellent purchase, though, as every time I wear it, strangers ask me where I got it!

Then I saw the first necklace, and I fell in love! It'd be so great with black or white tops. At $75, though, it was too similar to the first necklace. I gave up on it when it disappeared from the Madewell site and its brick and mortar store. I started looking for it on eBay with no success.

While looking at shoes the other day, though, I noticed that Madewell.com is having a SALE. I checked the jewelry on a whim and almost squealed when I saw my necklace marked down to $29.99. YES! Said necklace, which I've been lusting over for like 6 months, is now on its way to me.

Check out the Madewell sale - there's some cute affordable stuff! You can use the code SCORE for free shipping over $100, although I just grabbed my necklace and paid for shipping.

More wedding style!

The other day, I went shopping with my friend Jenn. Jenn and I were randomly assigned to one another as roommates freshman year of college, and we stayed roommates for all four years. I don't know if there's anyone else (other than my husband) with whom I could share a tiny room! Jenn, who is now a lawyer, has great style, and we love shopping together. One of my favorite things to do is "style" someone, as in, help them pick out an entire outfit for a specific occasion! Jenn has a wedding coming up next month for her boyfriend's sister. Challenge: the wedding is outdoors. In Wisconsin. In October. How would we find her something totally cute (and kinda modest) that would impress her boyfriend's relatives and also keep her warm in case temperatures drop? We decided to hit the mall: two ladies on a mission!

We ended up doing almost all of our shopping at Anthropologie, a store we both love. I should mention that dressing Jenn is kind of like dressing a Barbie doll: fun because everything looks fantastic on her!

Regardless, we pulled together this look for a fall wedding. I love the autumn colors of the dress, and the cut is flattering, with a nipped in waist. The neckline is modest enough for a family gathering while remaining youthful. Layering tights and a sweater coat takes this look into colder weather. We added some bronze accessories, like the bugle bead headband and some dangly earrings. We also changed out the brown sash for a belt to give the outfit a bit more edge!

I just found these shows on Polyvore - how freakin' cute are they?! And they're only $36 - too bad they don't have my size!

Jenn's Look by JanAlyssa featuring a wool coat

Wedding Style

I absolutely adore weddings. After spending an entire year planning my own wedding, I was sad to have it all end. I loved planning every teeny tiny detail of my big day, from my birdcage veil and feather fascinator to the kinds of flowers in my bouquet to the donuts in adorable individual bakery boxes we gave away as favors at the end of the night, a nod to our mutual love of The Simpsons. Now I get mega excited whenever someone gets married. I love helping and hearing details, and I especially love getting all dressed up!

My favorite weddings are those of my high school friends. One by one, we all seem to be getting married. After high school, we all moved away from Wisconsin, so weddings are our reunions. My friend Katie's wedding, which I have been looking forward to forever, is in a few weeks in Boston. I can't wait to see everyone! I last saw all the girls at my wedding, but, well, it's hard to really chat with everyone as much as you want to when you're being pulled in a million directions!

Anyway, here's what I plan to wear:

Katie's wedding I know this seems weird - shoe shopping is supposed to be every woman's favorite activity, right? But no, I would MUCH rather spend money on clothing! Every time I buy a pair of shoes, that's money I could be spending on some item of clothing, and I love love love clothes! Also, I have a size 10 foot and am 5'8". Not every shoe looks adorable on me, and I'm not used to heels, so I avoid them. I am on my feet a lot at work, so I need comfortable flats. My husband also happens to be about my height, so I generally stay away from sky high heels that make him feel short. Not that I could walk in them anyway!

Anyway, I decided I needed a new pair of tan boots to go with the AG Stevies I just bought - which were pricey but really fit perfectly.

So off I went to Steve Madden to try on boots, but for some reason, they weren't doing it for me. So I decided to go to DSW. I'd never been. There's a big store near Hollywood and Highland. I tried on the boots above, Steve Madden's Zaney, in a cognac color.

My husband, who is VERY picky about clothes for some reason, said they looked cheap and pirate-y. Even in the brown color. And they were cheap, only like $60. But they did look like they were vinyl, and because I have kind of small legs, they bunched weirdly around my calves. Anyway, my husband's favorites were the other ones shown, Coconuts Lieutenant in cognac. They are a much nicer leather, and they cost more than twice the amount of the Steve Maddens, $149.95, down from $225. I couldn't bear to pay it, and they didn't have the right size anyway.

I went home, though, and looked online. And DSW.com is AMAZING. You can STACK COUPONS. Unbelievable. I've never seen a site that allows stacked coupons! So I find a coupon for $45 off a $150 purchase. Okay, that knocks the boots down to $105, which I can handle. However, I find another coupon code - 20% off when you buy two or more items! I quickly add a pair of sequined SM flats (Reecey) for $39.95. If I don't like them, I can always return them. I apply the 20% off first, then the $45 off, and then, the piece de resistance, free shipping!! My two pairs of shoes now total $106.92 before tax. I've saved $168.08! Why would anyone shop in-store when you can get such great deals online??

Here are the coupon codes:

SAVE20 - apply first for maximum savings, good for 20% off two or more items. Consider adding a second item and then returning it later if necessary.

FALLSHOP - $10 off $49, $25 off $99, $45 off $149

SHIPR - free shipping

The 20% off ends today, so use it quick! You can return shoes to a DSW store or send 'em back, but then you have to pay restocking and shipping fees. Always visit retailmenot.com for coupon codes before buying stuff online. Hooray for my new favorite place to buy shoes!

Giveaway!

Yet another fun giveaway over at Breakfast at Gigi's - enter to win a super cute bracelet and $50 Anthro card! I have to say, it may be 80 degrees here, but I am in love with all of the fall stuff! For my birthday, I got the shirtdress with the flowers and birds, the Bianka blouse in black, and the Terrace House jacket in orange. Yesterday I went back to return my Vappu dress (so sad it didn't work!) and one of the 2 Looping Lanes belts I bought and ended up exchanging them for a pair of AG Stevie jeans. They are really adorable, fit perfectly, and are the perfect length, but I can't believe I spent so much on jeans. I generally wear my jeans into the ground, and I don't think I've ever had a pair that fit so perfectly, so I am going to say it was worth it :)

Tops on my wishlist:

Boucle de Souffle jacket in brown

Maryam Tank in sand (it almost looks like a nightgown because of the texture - I think I'll need to wait for sale on this one, but I love it under the jacket!)

Molded and Melded Tee (just about any color. I am going to need to stop by, because there are some ridiculously cute dresses on the site!

Check out Shabby Apple's website and be sure to stop by Saturday morning. I skipped the Anthro sale, so does that mean I can buy a dress from SA? ;)

Breakfast Awesome

So I realized I haven't actually posted any reviews of everyday things that have made my life easier/better/prettier - so let's get on that!

The other day, we were at the local Target, which has suddenly transitioned into a full grocery store with fresh produce and meats. Amazing! We decided to forgo our trip to Trader Joe's and grocery shop at Target instead, since we were already there anyway. We had to fight the crowds, but I love grocery shopping with my husband. It's always fun. I don't know why.

Anyway, there was a BIG photo of a delicious looking English muffin hanging from the ceiling, and I was like, "Damn, I really want an English muffin!" I am VERY susceptible to advertising, which is why I can't watch tv after 1am - too many infomercials. We had also just listened to an episode of Wait Wait Don't Tell Me which had gone into detail about nooks and crannies.

I traipsed over to the bread area, but there were NO English muffins! Sadness! Never one to dwell, I picked out the above strangely intriguing Thomas's Bagel Thins instead.

Okay, so these things have 110 calories, 1 gram of fat, and 5 grams of fiber. Not bad!! But don't get too excited. These are not the toasty, crispy, delicious bagels I am used to eating every morning from Coffee Bean. These are not those tasty Asiago Cheese calorie bombs from Einstein's (mmmm). These are not even grocery store bagels. No, these are pieces of bread masquerading as bagels with a hole in the middle. Alas! It's kind of like someone split half of a bagel in half and told you that was the bagel. Like you'd be easily fooled by that and not realize you're eating less than half of a real bagel.

Despite all this, I've been taking these bagels to work all week and eating them instead of my usual Coffee Bean bagels. It's saving me money, and although these bagels are not completely delicious, they are still tasty. I spread a little low-fat cream cheese between the two pieces, wrap with foil, and I'm good to go. It also keeps me full for a long time!

So, for saving me calories and money and still filling me up, I give Bagel Thins a 7 on the Awesome Meter. It ain't a bagel, but it also ain't bad.

Another great giveaway!

I randomly found this blog while looking for reviews for the Bianka blouse (SO CUTE) - fabulous blog, and she's running a giveaway!!

http://stfashionista.blogspot.com/2010/08/50-followers-contest.html#comments

Those are some super cute hair clips!! If you haven't looked at the unbelievably cute dresses and such over at Shabby Apple, do yourself a favor and head over there. I lust over the Sheep Meadow dress daily... just SO adorable. Check out the contest rules over at the blog. I would so love to win one of those prints, and I would probably frame the notecards too.

Working in retail, you rarely get time off around Thanksgiving. "Black Friday," or the day after Thanksgiving, is both a dreaded and revered idea. On the one hand, it allows companies to get back "in the black" if they happen to be in the red. However, to me, "Black Friday" always sounded doom-filled. And, if you've ever worked a Black Friday, you'll know that it truly is filled with doom and gloom, angry customers and long lines.

I'm from Wisconsin, and my parents still live in the same house I was born in. Well, okay, I was born in a hospital, technically, but you get the idea. Every year, I would come home for Thanksgiving, and every year, I'd smell the turkey and the stuffing all day, teasing me. And, of course, the pies. Pumpkin pie, always, a rich shade of rusty orange and glistening on top. I don't even like pumpkin pie that much, but on Thanksgiving, I'd gladly have a slice.

One year, I couldn't go home. I had to work Black Friday, and there was no way I could fly back and forth that fast; besides, air travel during Thanksgiving is close to unbearable. I only bear it for the pie. The pie I only really like in theory. Anyway.

At first, I moped, and moped consistently. Everyone I knew was leaving to be with family, even my boyfriend. I pouted as I drove my roommates to the airport and came home to a cold and empty apartment. Nobody I knew was really "from" Los Angeles, so almost everyone was flying elsewhere to be with family. I don't think I've ever been as happy as when two of my best friends mentioned they would be in California for Thanksgiving, as would one of their fathers, and would I like to join them? I was ecstatic. They quickly assigned me pie and macaroni and cheese. I make extremely good macaroni and cheese.

For pie, I determined I'd be making pumpkin. However, when I mentioned it to one of my friends, Jon, he made a face.

"I don't really like pumpkin pie."

"Yeah, but it's Thanksgiving."

"I guess I just don't really like pie."

Don't like pie??? I decided I had to remedy that, and, along with the pumpkin pie recipe off the Libby's can, make something special for Jon. He likes chocolate, so a quick search brought up a seemingly simple recipe for frozen chocolate mousse pie, by Paula Deen. It's Paula Deen, and it has lots of heavy cream, so it has GOT to be good, right? I made the pumpkin pie and then began the chocolate pie. I had to make some changes along the way because, well, it calls for chocolate liquor, and I couldn't afford to buy a whole bottle when I just needed a tablespoon. I will say, I am a good cook, but baking is much harder than cooking!

Here's my slightly modified recipe:

-2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

-1 quart plus 3 tablespoons heavy cream

-1 teaspoon vanilla

-3 cups powdered sugar

-premade pie crust

I know, I know, I wimped out with the premade pie crust. But like I said, I'm no baker!

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350. Prick holes in pie shell and bake for 11 minutes or until golden brown. Set aside to cool.

In medium saucepan over medium-high heat, melt chocolate chips and 3 tablespoons heavy cream. You can add an extra splash of heavy cream if it seems too thick. Cook until smooth. Add vanilla extract. Mix and let cool.

In a chilled metal mixing bowl (or a regular one, if you don't have a metal one), combine the quart of heavy cream and the sugar. Whip like a banshee. Using a hand (or stand, though I didn't have one at the time) mixer is highly recommended. It should become whipped cream-esque.

Now fold in the chocolate mixture slowly. Sloooowly.

Pour the mousse into the prepared pie shell and sprinkle a few extra chocolate chips on top. Wrap in foil and freeze for a few hours or overnight.

Easy enough recipe, right? Well, yes, but mine didn't turn out as I'd pictured. Instead of an even, chocolatey brown mousse, my mixture was more like white whipped cream with striations of chocolate that seemed to freeze free-form, so that it was more like a modified stracciatella gelato than a chocolate mousse. I think I folded the chocolate into the whipped cream wrong, but all the elements were still there. Regardless, the final product was chocolaty and delicious, if not traditional. I proudly brought it, still shrouded in foil, to my friend's house for Thanksgiving.

Jon couldn't believe I'd followed through on making him his own special pie. And hey, I actually got him to like pie!

It wasn't the same as being back in Wisconsin, of course - we never have macaroni and cheese at Thanksgiving, and chocolate pie would be blasphemous. But there were still those familiar elements... watching football, basting the turkey, debating about stuffing (inside the bird or outside the bird?).

While I missed my family, it really was a great Thanksgiving, and it felt good to celebrate together with my friends. However, out here in California, miles away from our parents and siblings, we are our own family. And at our family dinners, there's pie.

Woo, giveaway!

Today I was made aware of a new store called DownEast Basics. Head on over and check out her blog; it's one of my favorites! Ashley and I seem to have very similar taste, so I always love her outfits and product reviews!

She asks what you'd spend $500 on at Anthro, and I must say, I could spend that in a snap. Right now, I've become obsessed with the combo of the green, kind of Grecian feel of the Chantico tank and the black and white striped Hello Sunday blazer - one of the guest bloggers at Effortless Anthropologie had it on in her product review. I can't even wait to get off these crutches so I can get back to the mall!

10 on the Awesome Meter

So guess what's really awesome?? CONTESTS AND GIVEAWAYS!

I love entering giveaways 'round the Anthropologie blogs, as they always offer cute and creative prizes.

First up is a great giveaway over at Kim's blog, Anthroholic. Click here to see the post!

She's featuring a fabulous etsy store, Silver Lining Decor and their cute little baubles. My favorite are the Pink Givre Glass Rhinestone Kidney earrings - I love a pop of color, especially since I just recently got my ears pierced, so I'm trying to add to my collection. If you haven't shopped on etsy, you have to check it out - I got so much great custom stuff for my wedding there. But watch out, it's addictive!!

Next is Tricia's Take, a new blog I've been following lately after I found her and her sister via a great guest post on Effortless Anthropologie. Click here to see her giveaway! Those earrings (again with the earrings) are delicate and adorable. Love 'em, and would love an Anthro gift card! Go follow her blog and her sister's (over at Breakfast at Gigi's) for great fashion advice and some extremely cute outfit ideas.

And there's another giveaway over at growing up anthro, another new blog addiction. She's giving away an Anthro gift card, which I could put toward oh so many things on my wishlist.

Welcome to The Awesome Meter!

Hello and welcome to my new blog, The Awesome Meter!!

In each entry, something will be rated on The Awesome Meter - from 1 (gouge-your-eyes-out terrible) to 10 (keep-your-eyes-intact awesome). Some entries will focus around websites or blogs, others around specific items or shopping finds. You can nominate something for me to rate, too - just leave a comment with any ideas!

Let me tell you a little about myself so that you can understand the kind of things I'll be reviewing.

My name is Jan, and I'm a 27 year old writer living in Los Angeles. I went to film school, so I'm a big movie fan - I like almost all genres, even really cheesy romantic comedies - the more cliche, the better. To supplement my income, I also work HR part-time at a lingerie store. This has yielded more hilarious stories than I could fit in a million blogs. I was also recently married to the world's awesomest fellow.

I am verging on being a shopaholic. I love, love, love shopping, particularly for clothing. My favorite store is currently Anthropologie - give me just about anything from there, and I'll be happy. I did a lot of Internet shopping for my wedding, too, and have gotten quite adept at finding exactly the quirky items I want - you don't even want to know how much I have spent on Etsy.com. But we'll get into that later.

Unfortunately, about a month ago, I broke my ankle. I've been laid up with my computer, and you know what that means - Internet shopping. I have, for the past month, scoured sales like there's no tomorrow. There's nothing like being stuck in the apartment, hobbling around and eating Lean Cuisines, but still receiving a new skirt in the mail!

Before we go into reviews, a few things that are unequivocally awesome:

-my mega-cute husband

-In n Out cheeseburgers with grilled onions

-our dog, Wilson, aka world's best dog:

I mean, right??

Things that are not awesome:

-broken ankles

-covering your cast in three garbage bags plus duct tape to take a shower

Looking forward to seeing you around!
